Requests for permissions

This page enables administrators to handle requests for permissions on the English Wikipedia. Administrators are able to modify account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, file mover, extended confirmed, mass message sender, new page reviewer, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback, template editor rights and AutoWikiBrowser access.

Editors wishing to request a permission flag here should do so following the procedure below. Editors requesting permissions are advised to periodically revisit the requests page, as notifications will not always be given after a decision is made. Editors should not expect their request to be answered right away and should remember to be patient when filing a request. To find out what permissions your account has, go to Special:Preferences, where your permissions are listed in the user profile tab under "Member of groups".

Requests for permissions are archived regularly; please see Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Archive for an index of past requests.

User groups

  • Account creator (add request • view requests): The account creator flag is granted to users who are active in the request an account process. The flag removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24 hour period. It also allows users to make accounts with names similar to other accounts. The account creator flag is only given to users who participate in the ACC process and may be removed without notice should a user's participation in the account creation process cease.
  • Autopatrolled (add request • view requests): The autopatrolled flag is granted to users who are active in the creation of new articles. This tool is granted so their creations are auto patrolled in Special:NewPages. Unlike other requests, any user may nominate an editor for Autopatrolled, even without that user's consent. A user who wishes to have this flag generally should have created at least 25 articles and must be trusted, experienced, and must have demonstrated they are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, especially WP:BLP and Wikipedia:Notability.
  • AutoWikiBrowser (add request • view requests): AutoWikiBrowser is a semi-automated MediaWiki editor for Microsoft Windows, designed to make tedious repetitive tasks quicker and easier. It is essentially a browser that automatically opens up a new page when the last is saved. When set to do so, it suggests some changes (typically formatting) that are generally meant to be incidental to the main change. Please read the quick guide on the main page before requesting permission. This is not a true user right, but access needs to be granted by administrators just like other permissions. If approved, your name will be added to the CheckPage. Users with under 250 non-automated mainspace edits or 500 total mainspace edits are rarely approved. You will need to give a reason for wanting AWB access.
  • Confirmed (add request • view requests): The confirmed flag may be granted to new users who have not yet hit the threshold for autoconfirmed status. These are users who have not had both 10 edits and 4 days experience. People with this flag can upload files and edit semi-protected pages before hitting the autoconfirmed flag. Users requesting this flag must indicate clearly why they should be exempted from the customary confirmation period.
  • Event coordinator (add request • view requests): The event coordinator user right allows editors to create multiple new accounts, and to temporarily confirm accounts so that they can create new articles.
  • Extended confirmed (add request • view requests): The extended confirmed flag is normally automatically added to accounts after 500 edits and 30 days, but may be added to legitimate alternate accounts of users that already have this access. The flag allows users to edit pages under extended confirmed protection.
  • File mover (add request • view requests): The file mover user right is intended to allow users experienced in working with files to rename them, subject to policy, with the ease that autoconfirmed users already enjoy when renaming Wikipedia articles.
  • Mass message sender (add request • view requests): Mass message sender enables users to send messages to multiple users at once. This flag is given to users who have had made requests for delivery in the past, clearly showing an understanding of the guidance for use.
  • New page reviewer (add request • view requests): The new page reviewer user right allows users to mark pages as patrolled and use the page curation toolbar. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
  • Page mover (add request • view requests): The page mover user right allows users experienced in working with article names to move them, subject to policy, without leaving behind a redirect. They may also move all subpages when moving the parent page(s). General guidelines include making 3,000 edits and 6 months of editing history. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
  • Pending changes reviewer (add request • view requests): The reviewer flag is granted to users who are experienced enough with Wikipedia editing and its policies for contributing to the process of reviewing articles placed under pending changes. There is no set number of edits that must be done, but a general rule of thumb is that a user is Extended confirmed. However, a user must be Confirmed or auto-confirmed user to add requests to the page.
  • Rollback (add request • view requests): Rollback enables users to remove vandalism much more quickly and efficiently than by undoing it. Users who do not demonstrate an understanding of what constitutes capable vandalism fighting, either because they have no or little history of doing so, or show a poor ability to discern between good and bad faith edits will not be granted this right. Also, it is unlikely that editors with under 200 mainspace edits will have their request granted. For a more detailed explanation of rollback and information about when it is appropriate to use the tool, see Wikipedia:Rollback. For information about the technical details of the feature, see here.
  • Template editor (add request • view requests): The template editor flag allows users to edit protected templates and Lua modules. General guidelines for granting include making at least 1,000 edits overall (with at least 150 to templates or modules), being a registered user for over a year, and having a record of successfully proposing significant edits to several protected templates. Users should demonstrate proficiency with template syntax and an understanding of the need for caution when editing heavily-used templates.

Handled elsewhere

Several permissions are requested and handled elsewhere:

Removal of permissions

If you wish to have any of your permission flags (except administrator) removed, you should contact an administrator. If you want your administrator flag removed, you should contact a bureaucrat.

This is not the place to request review of another user's rights. If you believe someone's actions merit removal of a permission flag, you should raise your concern at the incidents noticeboard.

The bureaucrat, checkuser, and oversight flags are removed at meta:Steward requests/Permissions. Stewards will typically not carry out such requests unless they are made on behalf of the Arbitration Committee, by a user who is requesting their own access be removed, or in cases of an emergency.

Process

Requestors

To make a request for a permission, click "add request" next to the appropriate header and fill in the reason for wanting permission.

Any editor may comment on requests for permission.

Administrators

Administrators are permitted to grant account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, event coordinator, file mover, mass message sender, pending changes reviewer, rollback and template editor flags to any user who meets the criteria explained above and can be trusted not to abuse the tool(s). Administrators may either grant these permissions permanently or temporarily. For convenience, a bot will automatically comment with relevant data if the user does not meet configurable qualifications. Even if the bot does not comment, administrators should review the user's contributions and logs to ensure the tools will be used appropriately and check for any indication of potential misuse.

Once an administrator has granted a permission or decided to deny a request, they should add {{done}} or {{not done}} respectively under the request with their comments. If a user already has the requested permission, or is autoconfirmed and requesting confirmed, {{already done}} should be used. N hours after the last comment was made (as specified by the config), the request will be archived automatically: approved requests will be placed here; declined requests will go here. See User:MusikBot/PermClerk#Archiving for more information on archiving functionality.

Autopatrolled

User:GargAvinash

I mostly create articles of colleges and universities. Consider me if I am eligible for this right. GargAvinash (talk) 01:37, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
That's not bad for a new account. The only thing that holds me back is the distinct lack of definite articles in your prose. Is that an Indian language thing? Your articles would thus benefit from a copyedit. Is that something that you could work on yourself? That's really the only thing holding me back and if other editors think that's not a big enough issue (note I haven't place a 'decline' tag), then I'd be relaxed about it. Schwede66 04:16, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
Maybe you are right. If editors think that I am not eligible then I will come here later. GargAvinash (talk) 07:49, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
Also, I write articles according to WP:MOS and I usually take help from other good articles. Yes, I am from India and I take help from India based articles. So, the language may slightly differ. GargAvinash (talk) 20:37, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
I've fixed the issues raised on most of their new articles and I've messaged them on their talk page, I hope that they learn from it and fix the few articles that I missed, including their new creations in the future. About the autopatrol rights they're requesting, I don't see much issues about their new articles. They should be granted the right, since they're not really a bad content creator. —Nnadigoodluck🇳🇬 08:43, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
User:GargAvinash shoulb be granted this Autopatrolled right. I have not seen any issues in his new articles. He is also a good content creator. Soumitrahazra (☎ • ✎) 03:42, 1 FMarch 2020 (UTC)
  • Thank you for your contributions! The problem I have with these situations though is that schools are automatically notable. As long as you can prove they exist that's basically the only standard. There's nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't really show us your competency as an article creator in different fields, like BLPs for example. Do you have any examples of content creation not related to schools? ~Swarm~ {sting} 20:28, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
@Swarm:, thankyou for your interest. I am creating only education-related articles because I feel that these articles should be on Wikipedia. I will surely create other types of articles but only when I will come across one of them. You can check my participation in AfDs so that you can clear your views that I am aware of Wikipedia guidelines or not. GargAvinash (talk) 13:50, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

Event coordinator

User:A1l3min4ix

I'm hosting an Edit-A-Thon on March 27, 2020 from 11am-3pm at the Sciences Library at Indiana University. I'm expecting at least 40 attendees and would like to have event coordinator status for the event. I've edited a few times at other IU Wikipedia Edit-A-Thons. Event information can be found here: https://events.iu.edu/libraries/view/event/date/20200327/event_id/122419 I also created a dashboard to facilitate the Edit-A-Thon: https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Indiana_University/Women_in_STEM_Wikipedia_Edit-A-Thon Thanks! A1l3min4ix (talk) 17:10, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
Hello @A1l3min4ix:. Now that you have made a dashboard, that will allow you to create all the accounts that sign up through the dashboard (it didn't used to work like that but now it does). Will you be needing to "manually" make accounts or "manually" confirm accounts at this event as well? — xaosflux Talk 15:34, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
Hello again! Yes Xaosflux, I will be helping users manually make accounts as well as confirming the accounts.

Mass message sender

User:Celestina007

Mass message

Greetings to you all, I intend to serve & give back to this community by requesting this rights in order to optimize & utilize the Special:MassMessage feature to send imperative mass messages on weekends, asides urgent matters, to two specific target audience which are editors involved in WP:Wikiproject Nigeria & Wikipedia:WikiProject Comics/Marvel Comics work group of which both Wikiprojects are now unfortunately going semi inactive. In all, as of now I have in sum total made three successful requests on the WT:MMS due to kindness of both CAPTAIN MEDUSA & Path Slopu All my mailings have been non controversial nor ever has been for canvassing purposes. My predominant target would be active editors in WP: Wikiproject Nigeria I intend to draw their attention every now & again to certain goals we set out to achieve but are yet to have been achieved & left pending since 2016. As can be observed WP:Wikiproject Nigeria#Requests for uncreated articles here. My first ever mailing was to address the stagnancy as can be observed here ( now properly formatted = here) & and as a result of the mass message I sent we did achieve something as can be observed here, where a co-Nigerian editor, promptly responded to the message & swiftly created an article which had been pending for long & thanked me for taking this bold step to send the mass message which can be observed here. As mentioned earlier I have also sent mass messages to WP:WikiProject Comics/Marvel Comics work group as can be observed here. Furthermore I have read the guidance section on WP:MMS & even before reading the guidance section, I already knew it was prohibited to use this perm for bad faith actions like canvassing. All mailing lists created by me have unsubscribe links where an editor may choose to unsubscribe by simply removing their username. Also in our Nigerian Wikiproject there’s a link provided where editors may choose to subscribe or unsubscribe from further mass messages. I have now properly formatted my mailing list for those belonging to the WikiProject Nigeria as can be observed here, thanks to teachings I received from both Path slopu & CAPTAIN MEDUSA also I have properly formatted the message content itself as can be seen here. I should also add that I intend also commence the dissemination of Newsletters to active editors involved in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Horror which unfortunately, is also going semi inactive & Lastly I would also aid others in sending non controversial mass messages if or when they request for it at WT:MMS. I am more than happy to answer any questions or queries if need be thank you. Celestina007 (talk) 15:23, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

  • @CAPTAIN MEDUSA and Path slopu: any feedback you can give on this, looks like you handled the last couple of Celestina007's requests. My general criteria for this is: if someone is regularly requesting messages that are in technically in order and appropriate of content they should be able to self-service in the future. — xaosflux Talk 19:45, 18 February 2020 (UTC)
Sorry for the late response. I think Celestina007 can self-service in the future but there are some areas the candidate needs to work on. ~~ CAPTAIN MEDUSAtalk 17:56, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

New page reviewer

User:Vivek ji123

[sigh...] I'm requesting this as I'm long-time trustworthy editor that doesn't want to lose the right to be able to see the "[Mark this page as patrolled]" link, as I occasionally "manually" patrol new pages in the course of my editing. Let me be clear – I have no intention of becoming a New Page Patrol "regular" (I do sometimes check the New Pages list, but not very often...), nor do I intend to use Page Curation. But we shouldn't be removing the ability to "spot-check" new articles from long-time regular editors, esp. those of us who occasionally come across new articles as part of our work for various WikiProjects (e.g. I sometimes come across new articles as part of WP:TV or WP:FILMBIO or even WP:TRAINS editing...). Anyway, I meet the qualification criteria, and I understand the "[Mark this page as patrolled]" link will soon be disappearing for the rest of us, so I'll go ahead and request this now. --Vivek ji123 09:46, 06 November 2020 (UTC)

Not done Sorry, your track record of article creation and lack of participation in deletion discussions do not suggest that you are sufficiently familiar with notability guidelines to receive the new page reviewer permission at this time.
As a side note, I'm afraid that I can't find a track record of you having marked any pages as patrolled, could you point me at an example of one? signed, Rosguill talk 04:52, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

Not done. You've contributed many excellent articles, but for the most part these articles are about subjects with obvious inherent notability (e.g. any election article, "Critcket in Country X", Fauna of Afghanistan), and thus don't really demonstrate your knowledge of assessing notability. I am also particularly concerned about Chennai Super Kings–Kings XI Punjab rivalry, which doesn't cite any sources that actually say that these teams are rivals. Finally, your experience with deletion protocols seems a bit limited based on your AfD stats and your lack of a CSD or PROD log. I would suggest increasing your participation at AfD, fixing the issue with the Chennai–Punjab rivalry article, and reapplying in a few months. signed, Rosguill talk 19:49, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Not done, articles like Banasena and Ghoshayatra need citations to sources independent of the Mahabharata to demonstrate their notability. They also have some tonal and grammatical issues. Please familiarize yourself with Wikipedia's notability guidelines, as well as our policies against original research and fix up articles that you have created before reapplying. Once you have a firm understanding of the relevant policies and guidelines may also want to consider participating in deletion-related processes, such as AfD, to build up a more compelling record of work next time you apply. signed, Rosguill talk 19:58, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Hello. Had received temporary right which expired today. Requesting permanent flag. Please consider this as an unrequest if again eligible for temporary.
Gpkp [u • t • c] 16:46, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
Gpkp, from looking at a sample of articles you approved, everything looks to be in order, but I can't find much of a record with deletion, and am hesitant to hand out the permission indefinitely in this situation. I would be happy to extend temporary rights for longer, but I'm afraid I don't understand what you meant in your last sentence. signed, Rosguill talk 20:03, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
@Rosguill:, Thank you. What I meant was, as of now I was looking for the permanent right and not temporary, as I had the temporary right for last six months. I humbly withdraw my request. So once i meet the eligibility criteria with the deletion records, I would like to place the request again.
--Gpkp [u • t • c] 06:51, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Gpkp are you sure? It's really not a big deal to grant another extension. signed, Rosguill talk 18:03, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Thank you @Rosguill:, So kind of you. Actually whats the matter is, its really difficult to pass from temporary right to permanent/indefinite, as the performance range has to be more. I mean many hours has to be spent on checking articles of NPR list. So as days pass by, I thought of meeting the eligibility criteria with the deletion records and applying again. --Gpkp [u • t • c] 06:07, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
I'm going to go ahead and renew your provisional permissions for another month. Your actual reviews have been great so far, it's just that I'd like to see a similar track record for the articles which you think don't meet notability guidelines. Also, I would suggest setting up WP:TWINKLE to automatically log any articles that you mark for CSD or PROD so that your deletion work is clearly recorded and easy to review.  Done signed, Rosguill talk 17:45, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

If I'm not eligible, please mention reasons so that I can improve myself. Thanking you. Your's obediently Sri Harsha 191817 (talk) 12:02, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
Not done, I literally just declined your request and gave you an explanation of what you can do to improve your editing. Don't WP:ADMINSHOP. signed, Rosguill talk 17:47, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

Sorry sir. I won't repeat again.

Page mover

User:Crystallizedcarbon

As a new page reviewer I find some articles that would be best suited for draft space. I request the permission to be able to do the move without leaving the redirect and having to request its deletion. I do have extensive experience with moves w/o redirect as an admin in eswiki. Crystallizedcarbon (talk) 17:42, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
  • The reason for the first move was to disambiguate what was at that time an upcoming movie with the mythological being. An article under that title about the mythological being had been previously deleted at AfD (please see Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Odiyan)
  • This move was done on 16 October 2017. At that time there was no declaration of independence. A document titled Declaration from the representatives of Catalonia was signed by some MPs (those in favor of independence) outside the parliament. You can check in the article itself that that is the title of the document signed. So at that time there was no declaration of independence. The title was wrong and had to be corrected. A few days later, on 27 October 2017, a resolution based on the "Declaration of the representatives of Catalonia" declaring the independence of Catalonia was voted in the Parliament and was approved (see here). After my edit on that same day, the article title could be changed and the page was moved to Declaration of Independence of Catalonia. --Crystallizedcarbon (talk) 08:04, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
  • Thanks. The second explanation makes sense to me, but the first one still indicates possible problems. Wikipedia:Disambiguation states that "disambiguation is required whenever, for a given word or phrase on which a reader might search, there is more than one existing Wikipedia article to which that word or phrase might be expected to lead." In this case, the other topic was not only not an article, but had already been deleted. Recreation of the article on the mythological being is always a possibility, but we generally do not disambiguate article titles based upon the chance that another article will be created in the future. This is a good indication of why the film's article is now back at Odiyan. I was hoping that you would point this out in your reply. Dekimasuよ! 08:49, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
  • Thank you Dekimasu, I do understand and agree with that criteria. At the time of the move, I wanted to differentiate with the mythological being, also because I was about to nominate the article for AfD per WP:CBALL and WP:TOOSOON since the article was about a future event, had no references (please see here) and because in my initial search per WP:BEFORE I could not find enough coverage by independent reliable sources to justify inclusion. I wanted to avoid the confusion of having to list the article as a second nomination since the subjects were different, perhaps that was also not necessary but seemed reasonable at the time. Shortly after, sources were found with sufficient coverage to meet WP:GNG, so I withdrew the AfD as nominator. At that time it did not occur to me to move the article back since my focus then shifted towards improving the article by adding those newly found reliable sources. I do understand that moving it back then would have been a good idea. --Crystallizedcarbon (talk) 11:16, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
In case you need more elements for evaluation, please feel free to check this list of page moves (which include many examples of moves without leaving a redirect) at eswiki. --Crystallizedcarbon (talk) 13:42, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

User:SSSB

I am familiar with all the relevant policies and guidleines and have made a number of moves in the past. I mainly intend to use this to make uncontraversial moves over redirects specifically in moving the pages that make up Portal:Formula One/Next Grand Prix though it may be useful in other situations as well. I have also come across instances of this where this right would be useful. Thanks for your time.
SSSB (talk) 22:27, 8 March 2020 (UTC)
  • It looks to me like of your last 13 mainspace moves dating back to December, 8 were reversed and 3 are now at titles other than the ones you moved them to. This indicates to me that it might be helpful for you have more experience with the moves process before using this permission. Dekimasuよ! 06:19, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
Not done; concur with Dekimasu regarding experience. Primefac (talk) 15:32, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

User:Minorax

I would like to help out at WP:RMT to move uncontested requests. Also, I occasionally move accidental creations in WP/main space back into user/draft space, so having the suppress redirect right, I can CSD#R2 it myself. I have read the policy page. Minorax (talk) 06:14, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
Done on a temporary basis. You're at the bare minimum of my personal threshold for granting, so I'd like to see some of that interest being put to use before granting permanently. Primefac (talk) 15:36, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Respected admins, I'm an established user in wikipedia and working since December 2018. I'm basically a reveter. Anonymous users are vandalizing content. And I'm reverting. It's becoming difficult for me to revert. If I become Roll backer, I can do it at the ease. So, I kindly request you to make me Roll backer. Thanking you. Your's obediently Sri Harsha 191817 (talk) 03:20, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
Not done. In the span of a few hours you applied for three different permissions, and since then have been practically begging individual admins to approve your requests. You've badgered an admin who declined your request and apparently called for another uninvolved admin to resign for not answering you quickly enough. Sorry, but you're not requesting these rights for the correct reasons. – Juliancolton | Talk 16:45, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

In order to undo vandalism more easily, because without rollback only the last version is undone, but there are often vandalism in several versions. As a result, vandalism is often hidden behind good versions. --Killarnee (T•1•2) 14:58, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

It would help a lot in cleaning up the semi-frequent vandalism at particularly South American politics pages, where IPs/users make lots of small and conflicting edits that require long manual undoing. I'll try not to use it for anything else, even simple vandalism can be fixed with an undo explaining such. Kingsif (talk) 22:53, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
