I would like a enwiki version of the ja:Template:Category:日本の都道府県/下位 template that does the same function as Template:AllIrelandByCountyCatNav. ミラP 15:13, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
- BrownHairedGirl may be able to help here since she created the Ireland module. ‑‑Trialpears (talk) 15:28, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the ping, Trialpears.
- @Miraclepine: Please read the background to Template:AllIrelandByCountyCatNav at WP:IECATNAVP, especially the section §Irish_Counties. As I noted there, the Irish template was possible only because "Ireland has a had broadly stable set of 32 counties for over 400 years". Unless there is a consistent set of subdivisions, the automated approach doesn't work.
- That stability doesn't apply to, for example, counties in the island of Britain or to US states (whose map is stable only since the early 20th century).
- The Canadian provinces map has been stable enough to allow me to create {{CanadaByProvinceCatNav}}, and there may be other sets of subdivisions which are also stable enough to allow the same approach.
- In the case of Japan, Prefectures of Japan#Former_prefectures seems to me to say that the Japanese set as been stable only since 1943. That seems to me to make it impossible to have a single parameterless navbox for all periods, unless a whole bunch of complex conditionality was coded in. That would make it something very different to what I did for Ireland. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 15:55, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
Template:Mohanlal[edit]
Hi, can anyone create a navigation box for legendary Indian actor Mohanlal just like the ones you can see here and here. There are a number of related articles, such as
- Mohanlal filmography
- List of awards and nominations received by Mohanlal
- List of songs recorded by Mohanlal
- Pranavam Arts International (production company)
- Maxlab Cinemas and Entertainments (distribution company)
- Pranav Mohanlal (son)
- K. Balaji (father-in-law)
- Suresh Balaje (brother-in-law)
- Lal Salam
- Bigg Boss
- Jose Thomas Performing Arts Centre (co-founder)
- Aashirvad Cinemas
- Vismayas Max (Founder, acquired by Aries Group in 2014)
- Kerala Strikers (Co-owner, left in 2014)
- Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (President)
I have created two sample templates in my talk page. You can use that or custom build a new one. Thanks in advance.

- I have been planning on taking this on when I get some time, but just know that, like {{scroll box}} and {{scrolling window}}, such a template should not be used in the article space, as it renders any content obscured within the template unprintable. --Yarnalgo talk 02:58, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
Template:Usurped[edit]
Based on this discusion, User:AntiCompositeNumber made a good proposal for a new template. I started it but have no idea how it would work in practice because of the nowiki tags involved. Any ideas? We will also link the [Usurped] to a help page somewhere (possibly the template doc page). -- GreenC 16:18, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
- Because of edit filters, it can be tested on Talk:Compton's_Cafeteria_riot#External_links_modified_2 since the blacklisted URL already exists in the page. -- GreenC 16:22, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
- GreenC,
{{#tag:nowiki}}should work here since we're dealing with external links and not other wikitext like signatures or templates. See mw:Help:Magic_words#Miscellaneous --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 16:29, 14 February 2020 (UTC)Huh. it only worked in preview.... --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 16:31, 14 February 2020 (UTC)Alright, now I'm real confused...It works on User:AntiCompositeNumber/sandbox2, but not on the example talk page. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 16:35, 14 February 2020 (UTC)- I should have seen that without Special:ExpandTemplates. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 16:38, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
- AntiCompositeNumber, thanks. Would it be difficult/advisable to display the URL so the domain name is invalid, for example "." replaced with " ". -- GreenC 20:24, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
- What the template displays is very problematic because some usurped URLs lead to scams or outright malware. We should not display a link or domain name that a naive reader might try copy/pasting to their browser. Johnuniq (talk) 22:27, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
- Now has "." converted to "-" ..
https://en-wikipedia-org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requested_templates[usurped!]
- ..it won't stop a determined user but should reduce casual copy-paste. Three levels of protection: the "usurped!" notice, nowiki/code, and modified URL. We still maintain archive URLs which contain the source URL, and in
|url=of CS1|2 templates with|url-status=usurpedenabled. -- GreenC 04:26, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Connecting Wikipedia articles to reliable sources through new template[edit]
Hi All,
Please have a look at my proposal (maybe I should have posted it here) and contribute with your opinions: Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Connecting_Wikipedia_articles_to_reliable_sources_through_new_template

Tweak code of PresRow so that it doesn't look as ugly when substituted[edit]
{{PresRow}} is used in conjunction with {{PresHead}} and {{PresFoot}} to display the historical United States presidential election results of a given place. For example,
{{PresHead|place=Anyville, Illinois}}
{{PresRow|2016|Republican|23,444|2,456|333|Illinois}}
{{PresFoot|2012|Republican|333,333|22,222|123|Illinois}}
Gives
| Year | Republican | Democratic | Third party |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2016 | 23,444, 89.37% | 2,456, 9.36% | 333, 1.27% |
| 2012 | 333,333, 93.72% | 22,222, 6.25% | 123, 0.03% |
Due to template limits, this template has to be substituted at times. Unfortunately, the above code when substituted provides this code (open the edit tab to see):
| Year | Republican | Democratic | Third party |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2016 | 23,444, 89.37% | 2,456, 9.36% | 333, 1.27% |
| 2012 | 333,333, 93.72% | 22,222, 6.25% | 123, 0.03% |
Which looks messy in the edit tab. I am unfortunately not an expert in recursive substitution, so could someone please tweak the code, removing the comments or using safesubst, for example, to make the substituted code look like normal wikitable code. Much thanks!

Fixed (it was a one-character typo). * Pppery * it has begun... 23:11, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
- I have tested both subst: and safesubst: for all three winner scenarios on my sandbox and found them to my satisfaction. If not an imposition, there are nowiki tags surrounding the figures for non-winning parties (which I believe is due to the switch, but I don't know how to fix it), but it is otherwise just what I was looking for. Thanks! – John M Wolfson (talk • contribs) 23:21, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
- Those nowiki tags have always been in the template. * Pppery * it has begun... 23:24, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
- I know, and I think that the template would break without them, so it's not a big deal. Have a nice day! :) – John M Wolfson (talk • contribs) 23:26, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

Automatic coloring of election results by county without requiring an image[edit]
{{election by county|region=us-ma|size=320px|
color1=#2E64C5|Suffolk|Dukes|
color2=#5488DD|Berkshire|Hampshire|Middlesex|Nantucket|Franklin|
color3=#B5D6FB|Plymouth|
rest=#91B5ED}}
would produce
HotdogPi 13:24, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
- I doubt that this is possible, as it appears to require the manipulation of SVG source code via Lua, and even if it is its full implementation would be well out of my wheelhouse. Having said that, here's a proposed pseudocode algorithm of how it would work for anyone interested to try:
- Access the source code of a given base SVG file given the |region= parameter; for us-ma in particular this would likely be a blank version of https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/Massachusetts_location_Nantucket.svg. Perhaps Module:String could be used for that.
- Modify the source code of said SVG file by coloring the areas following the |color1, etc., parameter with the "id"s of the source code.
- Output an SVG file thus modified
- This would work if and only if Lua has the capability of directly accessing, modifying, and exporting SVG source code, which I doubt is the case. Again, if this is doable this would be quite frankly epic and I'd be more than happy in helping with its implementation (uploading base maps, etc.). This has inspired me to do the less ambitious goal of creating templates to standardize party results by vote percentage, {{Party results shading}}, and its subpages such as {{Party results shading/Republican/60–70}}.

- In terms of output capabilities, Lua can't do anything that Wikitext can't, so outputting a SVG from Lua is definitely impossible. I'm not sure about input, but I'd be surprised if if were possible. * Pppery * it has begun... 02:27, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
- We are able to create chessboards and music scores. Neither one uses images. Is there a way to do that for coloring counties? HotdogPi 13:04, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- Both of those work by taking predefined shapes and superimposing them upon a rectangular grid. The shapes already have their colours set: File:Chess klt45.svg is an image that is distinct from File:Chess kdt45.svg. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 14:03, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
