Wikipedia:Proposed article mergers
| This page has a backlog that requires the attention of willing editors. Please remove this notice if and when the backlog is cleared. |
This page lists proposed article mergers as a supplement to the merge categories; it is an index of ongoing discussions of possible mergers, and does not replace any of the other steps in the merger process. Please add the appropriate merger tag(s) to the articles before listing them here. To see all articles marked for merging, see All articles tagged for merging.
Note[edit]
Mergers of CATEGORIES should not be proposed here. Please see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
Mergers of TEMPLATES should not be proposed here. Please see Wikipedia:Templates for discussion.
SPLITTING of ARTICLES should not be proposed here. Please see Wikipedia:Proposed article splits.
How to propose a merger[edit]
There are three types of mergers on Wikipedia:
- mergers that are so obviously necessary and appropriate that no one is expected to object;
- mergers that would benefit from discussion with the other editors at the affected articles' Talk page about whether and/or how to perform the merge; and
- mergers that are either controversial or potentially difficult to carry out, and therefore need assistance from uninvolved editors in determining whether to merge the pages.
If the pages that you would like to merge fall into the type 1 group, then it is not necessary to propose a merger at all. You should boldly do the merger now, without formally proposing it. (In the event that someone unexpectedly objects, then the merger can be undone easily, and you can formally propose the merger for discussion at that time.)
If the merge falls into the type 2 group or type 3 group, or a formal discussion is needed or wanted, then proposing a merger can be done in three steps (as the proposer, you should still be willing to carry-out the merger in a type 2 article):
- Step 1: Create a place for discussion. Go to the Talk Page (also known as the discussion page) of the TARGET ARTICLE (the one you want to merge to) and create a section (eg: "Merger proposal") to discuss the merger. If there's already a discussion on the talk page regarding the merger, you can omit this step. Whether the discussion is new or old, make sure the discussion section names all articles involved and links to them. The section name can be anything that includes the word merge (for example
==Merger discussion==). - Step 2: Put one of the merger tags at the top of the articles you wish to be merged. The templates {{Merge from}} and {{Merge to}}, or {{merge}} are the most common ones. Remember to make sure that the Discuss link in each tag points to the section you've created in step 1 (this is to prevent having two separate discussions on different talk pages).
- Step 3: If the proposed merge is controversial or potentially difficult to carry out, follow the directions under #Requests for merge assistance and feedback to add it to the list.
- See: Copy and Paste easy merge templates for easy to follow shortcuts of the above procedure.
Requests for merge assistance and feedback[edit]
If you need outside feedback regarding mergers that are either tricky or of a controversial nature, please do the following:
- Tag the article as shown above
- Create a discussion as shown above
- Notify the talk page of the appropriate Wikiproject to get knowledgeable people to comment on it. (To find out which Wikiproject the page is associated with, check the associated talk page. It should be tagged with a template, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey.)
- If there is consensus to merge, but the merge is difficult, contact Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject Merge for assistance.
For other topics:
- If you need help with renaming or moving, consult Wikipedia:Moving a page.
- Cut-and-paste move fixes: If you have merged an article by this deprecated method, then you need to request page histories to be merged; list them at requests for history merge. Please DO NOT perform further moves by cut and paste.
NOTE: Please do not re-list old merge proposals that are already tagged and in the "to Merge" queue (including requests made up to two years ago), as these will be handled as we get to them. -Project Merge
Merge requests[edit]
New requests[edit]
If you need assistance with proposing a merge, list it below and someone will make sure it's properly listed. Note that this will not get the merge completed, as there is a large merge backlog. After a merge is listed properly, move it to the "Answered requests" or "Awaiting consensus" sections below as appropriate.
Please list new requests at the bottom of this section. Use the edit summary and list at least a link to the article to be redirected. Please legitimize your request by signing each listing or comment by typing four tildes (~~~~). Unsigned requests will not be honored.
- Merge International recognition of Israel with Foreign policy of Israel. WP:POVFORK. Recognition of Israel is widespread and largely undisputed, and the former accordingly is primarily focused on diplomatic relations, which belong in the latter. Wikieditor19920 (talk) 23:01, 18 February 2020 (UTC)
- Merge Filippo Raciti into 2007 Catania football violence. Wikipedia is not a memorial for fallen officers and most of the article's content can fit into the violence article easily. 96.232.112.252 (talk) 14:22, 2 February 2020 (UTC)
- Merge Mayhem (advertising character) into Allstate. This particular advertising character was made only for that company and its content can easily fit into the merge target. 96.232.112.252 (talk) 14:32, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
- Merge Hunger (physiology) into Appetite. Terms overlap a lot and neurological mechanisms explained in both articles are the same.Walidou47 (talk) 09:17, 4 February 2020 (UTC)
I would oppose a merge here, and support keeping the articles on Hunger (physiology) and Appetite separate. Hunger is not the same as appetite - appetite refers to a more generic tendency, hunger refers to a short-term state. Vorbee (talk) 07:41, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
- Merge Territories of the United States into U.S. territory. I'm not sure if these articles should be merged, but the article's descriptions seem to overlap. Interstellarity (talk) 23:35, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
- Merge Stauros, Crux simplex, and Descriptions in antiquity of the execution cross, all into Instrument of Jesus' crucifixion, or all the aforementioned into crucifixion of Jesus or even just crucifixion. The material and primary source citations are repeated multiple times, often with conflicting interpretations, across numerous articles, some of which appear to have been written or even created to push various POVs and non-reliable sources in different directions. Descriptions in antiquity of the execution cross should be a leading section in the main article of Crucifixion and is in any case unstable as a title, having been Early Christian descriptions of the execution cross until just now. Most of the material is also already covered at saltire, staurogram, Tau cross, crux ansata, Christian cross, cross, and so on. GPinkerton (talk) 19:18, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
- Merge Valeria Gribusova and VAL (band) because most of the information in the first article covers the second article. The second article is more relevant the first article should be merged into it. --DLU (talk) 20:45, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
- Merge Freeman on the Land into Sovereign Citizen Movement. These are two names for what is essentially the same concept, and are often used interchangeably. The articles are very similar and use many of the same sources. 69.30.184.77 (talk) 21:54, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
- Merge La Tuque (census division) into La Tuque (urban agglomeration). Same subject. --YB ✍ 14:45, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
- Merge Quebec (census division) into Urban agglomeration of Quebec City. Same subject. --YB ✍ 14:45, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
- Merge Kativik, Quebec into Kativik Regional Government. Same subject. --YB ✍ 14:45, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
- Merge Carolyn Barek into List of Law & Order: Criminal Intent characters. The character is relatively short and mostly plot. 96.232.112.252 (talk) 20:25, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
- Merge Black Thursday (2020) and Black Monday (2020) into 2020 stock market crash. There are discussions on the "Black Thursday" talkpage and the "Black Monday" page, as well as the destination talkpage. There is considerable support for the merger on the Black Thursday talkpage (10 support, 1 oppose). Given that one of the articles involved is on the front page news section, it would be useful if experienced editors can help with this merger. ThoseArentMuskets (talk) 20:01, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
- Merge Rette Jones Racing into Draft:Rette Jones Racing. There are two competing articles about this subject (a NASCAR team). The one that is an actual article now was created in February 2020 by User:NASCARfan0548 and another is an unpublished draft created in November 2019 by User:11darknight10. However, the latter is more complete/has more info in it, so I propose that Draft:Rette Jones Racing become published and the current Rette Jones Racing article be deleted, with its info put in the other article. Cavanaughs (talk) 04:26, 14 March 2020 (UTC)Cavanaughs
- Merge Barbara McDermott into Sinking of the RMS Lusitania. There is already a section in the merge target that talks about Ms. McDermott and there is no notability for the individual besides being a survivor of the sinking. 96.232.112.252 (talk) 22:53, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Awaiting consensus[edit]
After all involved articles are tagged for merger discussion, the request should be added at (or moved to) the bottom of this section. This section can also be used if a proposal needs further discussion due to age or disagreement. All merger comments and discussions should be directed to the Discussion subsection of the targeted articles' talk page, not here. We will also attempt to get more people to comment on proposals.
- Merge The Great-West Life Assurance Company, Canada Life Financial, and London Life Insurance Company into The Great-West Life Assurance Company (as the assuming/continuing company), with each page a third-level sub-section of the resulting page's "History" second-level sub-section, and subsequently renamed and moved to Canada Life (discussion). Note: A non-involved editor with page move permissions or an administrator will need to complete this request as a round-robin page swap for Canada Life will need to be performed in order to suppress the redirect. Note that merger proposal has gone unopposed and can be closed at any time by a non-involved editor now. --Doug Mehus (talk) 01:02, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

- Merge Sandaime J Soul Brothers into J Soul Brothers. The first article is about the third generation of the group J Soul Brothers. The second article which is about the original J Soul Brothers is very brief, contains info about the second generation but lacks all the info about its current generation. The merge would also follow suit with the original article in the Japanese Wikipedia. Either merge Sandaime J Soul Brothers into J Soul Brothers, or delete J Soul Brothers and move all its info to the article of the third generation in the history section. I am considering both mergers because the article that was created first was Sandaime J Soul Brothers. Takacchin10_10 (talk) 22:31, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

- Merge Edna Krabappel into List of recurring The Simpsons characters. She is not a series regular, just a recurring character like Dr. Hibbert and Lenny and Carl, which were recently merged too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by User:96.232.112.252 (talk • contribs)

- Merge Black Guardian into List of Doctor Who villains. I think that the content in the Black Guardian article can easily be explained in the context of the article about the villains in Doctor Who, and the article about villains in Doctor Who is of a reasonable size that the merging of The Black Guardian will not cause any problems as far as the size of the latter article is concerned. - Merge The Scouring of the Shire into The Return of the King with discussion here. Proposal has been open for over a month and heavily discussed, but the discussion is less than unanimous. - (DISCUSS) Merge Big Five (technology companies) into Big Four tech companies. Consensus was unanimous, though there's a parallel move request that may affect this merge in a tangential way, that is Big Four tech companies is proposing to be renamed Big Tech, so you may want to hold off until that concludes (or do the merge quickly before it concludes). --Doug Mehus T·C 01:30, 24 January 2020 (UTC)
- Moot: both articles have now been merged following consensus into a single Big Tech article as suggested above by the proposer. Richard3120 (talk) 16:46, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
- Richard3120, Thanks. Can you confirm that an actual content merger of the former into the latter was done, and not a straight redirection? I did note the photo gallery of the former was merged, but didn't look through whether some of the textual content was merged in. Doug Mehus T·C 15:08, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Dmehus: As far as I can see, all the text and the images from Big Five (technology companies) are included in Big Tech, they've just been reordered into a better flow but there's nothing missing. The history of Big Four tech companies just shows up as a redirect since its inception, so I can't check that. Richard3120 (talk) 16:45, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
- Richard3120, Yeah because Big Four tech companies is now a page move direct following its move to Big Tech. Thanks for double-checking the text of the page was, subject to some redactions and refactoring, merged.Doug Mehus T·C 16:49, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
