Quick question on German film copyright

Are cinematographers counted as authors under German copyright law? Trying to figure out the copyright status of Der Letzte Mann in Germany (it was copyrighted in the US in 1925 so it becomes public domain in the US next year). Abzeronow (talk) 16:04, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

I guess what you want to know is the duration of film copyright in Germany. There is a provision, UrhG § 65 (2), about the duration of copyright to a film, and it lasts until 70 years after the last death of four persons specifically named – director, writer of the script, writer of the dialogues, and composer of the music ("Hauptregisseur, Urheber des Drehbuchs, Urheber der Dialoge, Komponist der für das betreffende Filmwerk komponierten Musik.") So no director of photography there. I'm not sure how the composer part ("composer of the music composed for the film in question") applies to a silent film. There was music composed for this film (by Giuseppe Becce accd. to de.wp), but of course it was not really a part of the film itself, but meant to be played independently in cinemas while the film was shown. That is a 16 second film clip with no sound. Just the beginning of the film with the text quote (white letters on black) referenced here. --Rosenzweig τ 17:03, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

OK, thanks. I marked it for undeletion next year using the noinclude stuff and described that the authors have been dead for over 70 years and US copyright expires next year (a non-URAA example as "UFA filed an American copyright on 26 May 1925, which was renewed by the US Attorney General on 05 Feb 1953" per https://www.nitrateville.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=29253#p229595) Abzeronow (talk) 17:24, 19 January 2020 (UTC)
