I like keeping discussions in one place, therefore I usually post my contributions on the page where a discussion started. I will answer on this discussion page if a question is asked here. Likewise, I am grateful if you reply to my contributions on other discussion pages there, not here. If there's something urgent, you might get a quicker reply if you use my discussion page at the German Wikipedia, I'm visiting Commons less frequently. Thanks, Gestumblindi.

Nomination for adminship[edit]

How would you feel if I nominated you for adminship? I've noticed there seems to be a growing backlog of copyvio nominations, and you seem pretty familiar with copyright law. I know I myself probably wouldn't like the added pressure (or maybe that's sour grapes; there's no way I'd pass anyways), so don't feel compelled to accept. I've decided to start stalking the deletion pages and ask questions, so if you don't want to, I'll undoubtedly find someone more people to ask. --Quintucket (talk) 01:41, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the confidence. But... Well, I'm an admin over in the German-language Wikipedia since February 2009; admin permissions would come in handy here, too. I would also be willing to lend a hand in dealing with the backlog; however, I'm not sure that people would see me as active enough here on Commons. In a recent unsuccessful admin nomination (Letartean) I read the comment "Letartean has 9,600 global edits, with only 1,445 on Commons, and 200 of those in the Commons: namespace. That's right on the edge for me -- we usually like to see 2,500+ Commons edits and a few more in the namespace." If this was "right on the edge", then it seems that I wouldn't pass, as I have not much more edits here than Letartean. So I suspect that nominating me currently wouldn't be a good idea. Gestumblindi (talk) 03:01, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
I looked over the RFAs (I was originally going to ask Takebeg, who has similar credentials to you, but on an unrelated RFA someone complained about his behavior, which made me think he might have problems passing unrelated to his credentials), and there are several administrators who are promoted with fewer edits than you have. I'll dig up the threads if you like.
Edits in the Commons namespace is meant to show one understands deletion policy, which it seems that you do. In Letartean's case the same user who complained about his edits also noted that his commons edits were on quality image candidates rather than deletion requests and copyvio issues, which aren't the case for you. QIC of course does not require admin tools, DRs do.
If you're willing to accept the nomination, I'd still like to nominate you. Given that we really do need admins and you have a respectable track record, I think the community would accept you. An if they don't it would be more a commentary on my judgment than your qualifications. --Quintucket (talk) 14:36, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
Well, if you think it's worth a try, be me guest and go ahead :-) - I'm not very eager, but I could and would use the privs, I think. Should the community not want me as an admin here, no problem. Gestumblindi (talk) 21:26, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
I have nominated you. You still have a chance to back out, you have you state your acceptance on the nom for the request to take effect. ;•) --Quintucket (talk) 23:24, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

User rights management[edit]

Hey, I noticed you added User:Kelson to the GWToolset user group together with giving them additional filemover rights. We have COM:RFR for the filemover group, so I wonder why you gave Kelson those user rights without following the regular procedures? Thanks, odder (talk) 22:23, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi odder; I just wrote to Steinsplitter in this matter, see also his talk page. Kelson is heavily involved in GLAM projects and it was with his help and experience that we got e.g. the images of Commons:Zentralbibliothek Solothurn uploaded. Although he did request access to the GWToolset by e-mail, giving him also filemover rights was a spontaneous idea of mine, as I think it will be helpful for his projects - and as he's an experienced user with thousands of edits, I did not think there would be any problem with that. I suppose, given his record, he would certainly receive these rights if requesting them through COM:RFR, but I'm not really experienced in user rights management - is there a strict requirement to use this RFR process? Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on . Click here to learn more and vote »

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Painting creation vs publication[edit]

Did the issues you raised in this discussion ever move forward or become settled or refined? I'm the newly-minted Wikipedian in Residence for the Amon Carter Museum of American Art and I'm trying to figure out what's generally acceptable in determining what they can and cannot upload. Regards, TransporterMan (talk) 19:54, 13 February 2017 (UTC)

@TransporterMan: No, I think the discussion became stuck there. As there was no response whatsoever to my last proposal, I abandoned it (well, could probably have gone ahead trying to introduce the warning template); de facto policy probably is still as noted by Lupo, "Common practice around here seems to be to assume that anything created before 1923 was also published before 1923". Probably there's also unpublished art in the museum's collection? According to the Hirtle chart, this could be {{PD-US-unpublished}} if the author is known and died more than 70 years ago, or if the work was created more than 120 years ago. Gestumblindi (talk) 00:46, 14 February 2017 (UTC)
It's the difficulty in figuring out whether or not something has been published which has me concerned, since everything hinges on that. I've not yet worked with the museum's copyright agents to determine how and to what extent they research that issue, so they may well have a database of all the publication and other facts for all their holdings or, at the very least, the means to thoroughly and easily research it when needed. My goal at this point was to be ready for that conversation by knowing what Commons requires, both theoretically and practically. I appreciate your help in getting there. Best regards, TransporterMan (talk) 15:40, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Bild verschwunden[edit]

Gestumblindi (talk) 19:49, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

Italy[edit]

Thanks for your comments at Commons:Deletion requests/undefinedmoyan brenn. I am worried there may be issues with some of the photos I took in Rome. See User:Colin/Rome. Do some/all of these images need that template or do some need to be deleted? I see that Template:Soprintendenza mentions "Users who are citizens of Italy are warned that they are solely responsible for any possible violation of local laws." who are the "users" here? Those who took the picture, those who uploaded the picture, or those who publish the picture somewhere? My guess is User:Moyanbrenn is a "citizen of Italy". Should he be concerned? -- Colin (talk) 07:28, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

@Colin: I'm not a lawyer and certainly not an expert in Italian cultural heritage law, but I do assume that all images of old buildings, ruins, and sculptures in Italy should be tagged with {{Soprintendenza}}. This assumption is based on the information available e.g. at Commons:Freedom of panorama#Italy. It seems that a very broad definition of "cultural goods" is applied ("any art work, or building older than 20 years, should be assumed actively forbidden"). Still, this is a non-copyright restriction that isn't considered grounds for deletion of works from Commons. And I do not think (again, it's just my personal opinion as a Wikipedian dabbling in copyright and related rights) that uploading and hosting such files on Wikimedia Commons is even a violation of Italian law, as Commons itself is a non-commercial and educational project (educational uses are allowed without payment to the Soprintendenza, apparently). Commercial re-use probably would only be an issue for the re-user. So I think that Moyanbrenn doesn't need to be concerned. Still, although I cast a Symbol keep vote.svg Keep vote for such cases, I wouldn't be really opposed to a courtesy deletion if Moyanbrenn as an Italian citizen is very concerned about possible legal issues. Gestumblindi (talk) 20:11, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

Dear guys, ::@Gestumblindi: ::@Colin:, thank you for your intervention. Just wanted to let you know that this morning i personally spoked with a couple of individuals here in Italy, and they told me not be concerned for now. As long as i'm shooting to very old buildings in public spaces, i don't need to be worried. This is why i found so many pictures of Colossum here on Wikimedia without problems. This is different of course if you shoot inside museums of course but you already know this. this should be really a worry but it's not my case.....::@Colin: eventually could have a problem with his picture of Vatican Museums, and yes i would ask for an eventual DR for that one! So yes, ::@Gestumblindi: I was absolutely right Thank you guys! I feel better now! hope to have a nice weekend! I have requested to abort my DR! Cheers!

Bewertungen in QIC - Consensual Review[edit]

Gestumblindi (talk) 13:27, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
Hallo Gestublindi, was Du schreibst, ist grundsätzlich richtig.

PS: It's most certainly neither a fir (Tanne) nor a spruce (Fichte), look at the way the needles sprout from the branches... that's typical for a pine, assuming this is the correct translation. Gestumblindi 20:43, 16 December 2017 (UTC) AH. This is why the Latin name Pinus sylvestris is good. On en wiki that is an article with a close up of the needles. Yes, it's a Pine. In English it's know as "Scots Pine". I'm going to add this to the file page, if that's ok. Good quality. PumpkinSky 23:06, 16 December 2017 (UTC)

A Q1 photo, but please remove those two insects --Michielverbeek 19:49, 17 December 2017 (UTC)First I thought these were birds in the sky, so I would have argued for keeping them as part of the natural environment, but after a closer look, I agree, seem to be insects and probably just distracting from the subject. But I'm not good at image manipulation, maybe you can help? Gestumblindi 10:05, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
I have ✓ Done removed the insects. A third opinion please for this possible Q1photo. --Michielverbeek 22:08, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
Good quality. --Trougnouf 20:25, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

Quick translation request[edit]

Hi, I am about to edit wikidata and am wondering if I can request a translation of "village in China" in Alemannic German. Thanks in advance. Artix Kreiger (talk) 18:00, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

@Artix Kreiger: It's "Dorf in China", in this case not different from standard High German :-) Gestumblindi (talk) 19:03, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
Danke very much Artix Kreiger (talk) 19:08, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

AN[edit]

Hi Gestumblindi, hast du vielleicht Zeit dir diese Sache einmal anzuschauen? Ich würde deinen Input sehr schätzen! Danke und schöne Grüße --Martina talk 06:01, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Überbauungen[edit]

Hir Gestumblindi. --Bobo11 (talk) 08:44, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

@Bobo11: Hm, schwierig. Gestumblindi (talk) 13:41, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Löschdiskussion Spiegel-Titelbild[edit]

Hallo Gestumblindi, das eine Spiegel-Titelbild ist seit Anfang September in der Löschdiskussion (Commons:Deletion requests/File:Der Spiegel Sachsen.jpg). Ist also schon eine Weile her.

Further screencaps[edit]

Hi, here are some more: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Godzilla_-_PS4-PS3_-_Ultimate_mayhem_(E3_Trailer)_-_Super_MG.png?uselang=it https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Godzilla_-_PS4-PS3_-_Ultimate_mayhem_(E3_Trailer)_-_Kiryu_v_Goji.png https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Godzilla_-_PS4-PS3_-_Ultimate_mayhem_(E3_Trailer)_-_MG.png?uselang=it Mariomassone (talk) 07:27, 2 February 2019 (UTC)

@Mariomassone: Thanks for the pointer. There is now a new deletion request Commons:Deletion requests/Files found with bandai youtube where these are included, and per this short discussion, I think we have to wait at least seven days, and probably another admin should handle these. Wasserflaschen...[edit]

Kannst du mal bitte meinen letzten Post überprüfen? Danke --Ralf Roletschek 20:59, 8 June 2019 (UTC)

@Ralf Roletschek: Statt "Your homepage" ("Deine Homepage") sollte da "Her homepage" ("ihre Homepage") stehen, und "She is personally known" statt "It is...", ansonsten vielleicht etwas holpriges, aber verständliches Englisch, das Google da produziert hat. Unlawful deletion of my file[edit]

You deleted a file that was made and uploaded by me, File:Flagofserenia.png, on the notion that it's a personal artwork. In this article (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Project_scope) however, it states the following;

"An otherwise non-educational file does not acquire educational purpose solely because it is in use on a gallery page or in a category on Commons, nor solely because it is in use on a user page (the "User:" namespace), but by custom the uploading of small numbers of images (e.g. of yourself) for use on a personal Commons user page is allowed. Files relating to projects or events of the Wikimedia community, such as user meetings, are also allowed."

I only used the image in my personal User:Sandbox in Wikipedia, therefore i believe that you have unlawfully deleted my file.

Finlandestonia (talk) 21:27, 26 July 2019 (UTC)

"Unlawful" is a strong word. I suppose that as a non-native speaker (like me), you rather meant something like "unjustified". Anyway, the wording from Commons:Project scope you cite isn't a license for any kind of personal cavorting without any educational or encyclopedic background. True, we wouldn't delete a personal image of yourself for use on a personal page here or in Wikipedia, if you're an active user. But it seems that you're using en:User:Finlandestonia/sandbox for playing around with a succession of fictitious countries (currently a "Republic of North Africa", previously a "Federation of Balto-Azovia" and other nonexistent entities), and were not even using that particular file anymore when it was nominated for deletion, if I see it correctly? So I don't see for what purpose you would need it anymore. But if you nonetheless believe that the deletion was unjustified and the file should be restored, I would like to point you to Commons:Undeletion requests where you can appeal the decision.

Gestumblindi (talk) 21:55, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
Vielen Dank! Ich habe gemäss deiner Empfehlung {{PD-Switzerland-old-unknown}} eingesetzt. --Hadi (talk) 13:14, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

Michèle Costa-Gavras[edit]

Guten Morgen und vielen dank for closing the deletion request on File:Michèle Ray-Gavras - Octobre 2019.jpg ! I’m sorry I got quite pissed at this, I fully agree with your assessment with who the author is. My opinion is that my friend is more the author than I am but that OTRS should not be the way to « prove » authorship or permission in these cases :). (My old OTRS days show that’s a weak way to prove anything when not originating from a public figure/institution :)). Cheers! Luk (talk) 08:26, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
