Notice

If you are concerned that a category gets flooded with automated uploads, check that a template like {{Disambig}}, {{Photographs}}, {{Categorise}}, {{CatDiffuse}} or {{CatCat}} has been applied before complaining. In the case of my batch upload projects, any category marked this way will not be added to new photographs. -- (talk) 16:32, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

File:Mt. Rainier from Roof Garden, Hotel Lincoln, Seattle, Wash (NYPL b12647398-68897).tiff[edit]

What (if anything) is the basis for 1898 as a date for File:Mt. Rainier from Roof Garden, Hotel Lincoln, Seattle, Wash (NYPL b12647398-68897).tiff? Looks based on a photograph, not just an architect's visualisation drawing, but the building had not been built at that date (completed 1900, burned in 1920). - Jmabel ! talk 06:49, 27 November 2019 (UTC)

The date is simply pulled from the NYPL catalog. In this case the date appears to be for the collection not the item. Hence "1898: Issued (Approximate)" is actually the earliest date for objects in the collection, so if we can deduce more based on the building itself, that can at least be added. The dates for the postcards should probably all be adjusted to a date range or at least qualified to say this is the earliest date.
As the upload was 2016, I have no precise memory of the mappings used, and the current NYPL catalog page looks very different to what it was back then and may be displaying different data. -- (talk) 07:04, 27 November 2019 (UTC)
About what I thought. Sounds like if we can still identify what was in that batch, anything that says 1898 should instead say {{other date|after|1898}}. I'll correct the date for the one I was looking at. - Jmabel ! talk 07:13, 27 November 2019 (UTC)

Hmm, I notice, in looking at half a dozen of these Detroit Publishing Co. postcards, that they have serial numbers. Maybe those numbers are in strict chronological order, in which case a category listing them in that order would allow interpolating from the dated ones to date all of them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jim.henderson (talk • contribs)
The categories already have keys by image ID. I hestitate to replace those keys. However I am running a routine to add postcard numbers from the NYPL catalog to the description, ref search. This makes it easier to do some smart report later, without having to read from external sites.
As a test, it may be that DPC>5000 ⇒ year>=1901 and DPC>6000 ⇒ year>=1902 -- (talk) 17:04, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
Ah, and I see you have started adding "Postcard series number" from the publisher's printed serial number. Very good. Clearly the files already have many numbers, but what I failed to notice is that they are already sorted chronologically, more or less, because that's how the "NYPLb" number was assigned. This suggest that all year I have been going about this the wrong way. Instead of continuing what someone else started, by making and filling geographic subcats, I should have started with annual subcats, partly to break down the large category that hinders my operation with slow DSL and other impediments, and partly as inboxes for geographic and other category work. It might help if the sources and uses of the various numbers were described on a page, perhaps the Detroit Publishing category talk page or some other that the ignorant are likely to stumble across. Jim.henderson (talk) 19:44, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

Detroit postcard numbers[edit]

Elle of Ganado, DPC 9999, published "prior to 1906"

Looking at the first 2000 DPC numbers, filtering for dates (and end of range dates where they appear), gives:

Year Min Max
1901 132 497
1902 5011 7636
1903 6002 6999
1904 60523 8704
1906 9011 9999
1908 11000 12157
1909 12026 12999
1915 60007 60538
1918 71002 71981

Empirically that's probably very good evidence to use the postcard number to deduce a latest date of publication where this is missing, noting that some have ranges like 1905-1915, so choosing "1915" is definitely a latest date that might be refined later.

A place to keep specific dating tips for the NYPL collection is at User:Fæ/Project list/NYPL, it may even be worth a shortcut link. -- (talk) 11:50, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

L. De Man - a Dutch Marine artist, and two incorrect uploads[edit]

Hi Fæ, Your upload of File:A Bear Hunt in the Arctic RMG BHC0974.tiff is incorrectly uploaded. The image should be flipped. The fault lay in the past with RMG / NMM I think. The correct image can be found here on Commons with the wrong name and details. See File:Royal Yachts, one Ketch Rigged and one Smack Rigged RMG BHC0979.tiff Again that too was uploaded incorrectly for probably the same reason. See the Museum site for confirmation.

Additionally you will notice that the latter file is incorrect, it should in fact be this image at the museum site [Royal Yachts, one Ketch Rigged and one Smack Rigged]. I don't know if it's lurking elsewhere on commons under another name. Obviously all the other details for both files are correct, just the wrong images are in place.

Question: Why do I have to bother you to make the corrections? The server is not letting me do it? Why? Regards. Broichmore (talk) 11:08, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

You may be seeing the artwork overwrite flag? This affects everyone and is, frankly, a pain in the arse. If you are seeing some other error, I'm not sure what it is. -- (talk) 11:11, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
Yes I saw it and pushed for ignore and carry on, to no avail. Broichmore (talk) 11:19, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
Ignoring should work. You may want to make a separate upload, then raise it on AN for a sysop to do the overwrite. In my view, as the largest uploader of artwork files on this project, the artwork overwrite flag is badly implemented and trusted accounts should not suffer blacklisting uploads like this. -- (talk) 11:21, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
There's an Admin who accused me (incorrectly) of vandalism, so much bs, has he put a block on me of some description? Broichmore (talk) 11:29, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
No, the log on your account is blank. -- (talk) 11:50, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
I've fixed almost everything, in Category:L. De Man, except for the replacing the tiff, of [Royal Yachts, one Ketch Rigged and one Smack Rigged] which I don't have access to get, or am I doing something wrong. Do you have special privileges at NMM? Also now that this awful BREXIT business is finished, are you now going to resume visitations to the Penderel?
I have spoken in real life with parts of the NMM, but I do not have special access. To download the TIFF you have to use their IIP image server and dezoom them, for which you can probably use the process at User:Fæ/dezoomify for a one-off. The Ophir tool renders a PNG, but it's still an option.
As for 'spoons, I'll not be walking into any for the foreseeable future. -- (talk) 18:19, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
Unfortunately that didn't work for me. So I'll have to wait for the 'spoons' and get lucky for someone who can explain. I'm still on NoScript.
However, might it be the case they have withdrawn access to tiff?
Have a look at File:The capture of HMS 'Tickler', 4 June 1808 RMG BHC0584.jpg which I just downloaded, and have a look at the folder Category:HMS Tickler (ship, 1804).
Earlier you had downloaded a black and white tiff from the same URL. They seem to, on occasion augment / revise data / upgrade images and sometimes flip them / etc.  Clearly there are also many new images and upgrades on the NMM site that we don't have. Do you scrape for such changes? Can you?
Another thing we don't catch on their pages is their cells "Object connections: example Vessels. Regards Broichmore (talk) 20:19, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
While I'm at it can I ask, why you upload tiff's as opposed to PNG's. I ask because I'm having to make a similar decision, and would value your advice on it. Thanks. Broichmore (talk) 19:12, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

Category:Speedy deletions for files over 10 years old[edit]

Hi! I think this category is a great idea. It makes it easy to spot old files that need someone to look at them. I made a few edits like this one just as a test. Do you agree we can remove the category once source / author has been added? --MGA73 (talk) 08:03, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

Yes. If the file is still found in speedy categories it may be re-added. There is no automatic removal at the moment. -- (talk) 10:45, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
@MGA73: The script will now (eventually) auto-remove the maintenance category if the image has been removed from the tracked speedy delete candidate subcategory. -- (talk) 16:03, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
WTF is this aggressive category good for? I just reverted some vandalism by this havoc running bot, that marked some of my pictures for speedy deletion. WTF is this havoc running and scaremongering good for? Grüße vom Sänger ♫ (talk) 15:08, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

Speedy deletion means only one thing: This file should be deleted asap. The category sais just one thing: This file should be deleted asap, because it's too old. If you had anything else in mind with this category, it's completely wrong named. Grüße vom Sänger ♫ (talk) 15:14, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

Given User:Faebot/old speedies, what name would you suggest? -- (talk) 15:23, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
Anything without the clearly defined word speedy in it. Maintenance would be the first word that comes to my mind.
Nevertheless, I can't even come up with any reason why the two files by me have been tagged by this scaremongering havoc-run at all: File:Martin Luther Dampftraktor in 2002.jpg and File:Altteile des Martin Luther Dampftraktor in 2012.jpg are missing nothing. Grüße vom Sänger ♫ (talk) 15:28, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
The picture, you use as an example on that page User:Faebot/old_speedies has as well everything necessary to keep it from being speedy deleted. What's this extreme scaremongering good for? Why did you use the complete misleading term speedy deletion for files, that are in no way in any risk of being deleted at all, let alone speedy? Who do you want to scare away? Grüße vom Sänger ♫ (talk) 15:43, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
The thumbnail example is in a subcategory of Category:Candidates for speedy deletion. Jcb's history of deletions shows that there are administrators that will and do delete files with "missing" sources, without actually reading the image page.

With regard to the example, I am unsure what triggered the file being found. Files must be in one of the subcategories of Candidates for speedy deletion. Here's the breakdown automatically generated and used by Faebot:

-- (talk) 15:50, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

The source of the example picture is plain and clear on the file page, if some havoc running deletionist admin would delete it, s/he should be de-sysoped asap. My two pictures, the ones that I became aware of this havoc run, are in absolutely no such category, they were only briefly in it, because you placed the scaremongering cat on them. This is a maintenance category, not a deletionist category. The name is grossly misleading. Grüße vom Sänger ♫ (talk) 15:59, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

Backtracking is impossible, but the logic is that one of the above must be a parent category. If that has gone wrong, I am really unsure why but it might be related to the SDC category.
To avoid doubt, I'll change the code to post the relevant speedy deletion subcategory in the edit comment. It means rewriting the way the main loop works, so it may take a while.
Maybe a clearer name would be "Files uploaded over 10 years ago in a speedy deletion subcategory". -- (talk) 16:23, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
If they were really in there, that could be OK, my two pictures were never ever in any trouble from the deletionists, not even those too lazy to read the page itself, not just the machine readable stuff. I can't say whether any other collateral damage was done with any other pictures like my two, and I won't look through every pic by hand. Grüße vom Sänger ♫ (talk) 16:28, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
It's also true that the longer I have spent looking at these Speedy subcategories, the less sense they make. I have removed Category:Orphaned talk pages as a subcat, mainly because that actually includes Category:Commons orphaned talk pages that should not be speedily deleted‎ which could not be more obviously not a speedy deletion subcategory. As a result in the re-write I'll look at being very restrictive with which categories are scanned. -- (talk) 16:33, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

Duplicates among LOC maps[edit]

Hi Fæ, just wanted to bring to your attention that your current LOC map uploads seem to include duplicate files. Below is an incomplete list of examples, and I'm only listing the tif versions here, the same will probably apply to the jpg files. Thanks for looking into this. 2001:4BB8:25C:9E7:245A:38DD:DFBF:E60C 22:59, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

                ]
            },
            "87685555": {
                "pageid": 87685555,
                "ns": 6,
                "title": "File:Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Chickasha, Grady County, Oklahoma. LOC sanborn07038 005-18.jpg",
                "imagerepository": "local",
                "imageinfo": [
                    {
                        "timestamp": "2020-03-04T23:43:23Z",
                        "user": "F\u00e6",
                        "sha1": "676add21088fd6fff139906159d1e318be4d2ec5"
                    }
                ]
            }

For unknown reasons, the files have different SHA1 values, and so the mediawiki API will not return duplicate errors. There are more complex ways of finding these duplicates, but that would be a special project. It's also not clear why this apparent bug exists within the LOC API. -- (talk) 09:12, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

Non-core[edit]

You’ve probably noted it somewhere else on Commons but what does the "Non-core" column refer to in the DR tables e.g. in Commons:Deletion requests/File:Fruit ninja game depiction with painted fruit on a naked female.jpg? Cheers. -Green Giant (talk) 13:17, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

It's a lazy filter for global "non-article" spaces. Currently the regex is "(talk|User|Commons|Wikipedia|Benutzer):". To be language-independent, I ought to rewrite it based on namespace numbers, but it's only a command-line report that is rarely run. -- (talk) 13:30, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

Category:Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Petaluma, Sononia County, California[edit]

Can you double-check Category:Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Petaluma, Sononia County, California? It's a subcategory of Category:Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Petaluma, Sonoma County, California which is the actual name of the county. I think the images are duplicates so they can be deleted. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 21:18, 12 March 2020 (UTC)

Uncrop needs[edit]

Hi Fae. This file File:Cyclopedia of architecture, carpentry, and building - a general reference work (1912) (14595391917).jpg (and some others) need to be uncrop. I made the request, unfortunately the result is not good because the View Book Page does not match the image. I tried again to request the uncrop after changing the page number, but the uncrop failed twice. I do not know why. Can you please help me solve this problem? The files are as follows:

Thank you so much for your help. Best wishes. --DenghiùComm (discussione) 04:21, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

It is possible that the file is wrongly archived. The correct page number gives me 404 errors when trying to download the jpg. You may need to try manual downloads rather than relying on automation. --Fæ (discussione) 17:30, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
Hi Fae. I come again to you. I have correct in all thes files the Book Viewer that does'n match the image, and asked the uncrop, but only one file was fixed. Please can you help me why the other files were not uncrop ? Thank you so much for your help. Cheers,--DenghiùComm (talk) 09:42, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
