BMacZeroBot adds images to disambiguation page[edit]

Hi BMacZero, the disambiguation page Category:Landscape should be empty, but it currently contains more than 900 files. I checked a few and found that they were all uploaded by BMacZeroBot. Please make sure that your bot doesn't add disambiguation pages as categories. Category:Landscapes may be slightly more adequate, but, as has been noted above, is still far too general and shouldn't be flooded with files either. --Sitacuisses (talk) 18:06, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

@Sitacuisses: Thanks for the feedback! I did change things so the bot should make use of location subcategories now, such as Category:Landscapes of Washington (state), so this shouldn't be a problem going forward. Those files are probably all from before that change, which I added on September 20th. – BMacZero (🗩) 15:57, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

File:James St cable car line of the Seattle Electric Co on wooden cribwork during the 3rd Ave regrade, ca 1907 (SEATTLE 957).jpg[edit]

I don't think I've ever put this much work into metadata for what's really a pretty lousy scan of a photo. 45+ minutes, much of it research (and some of it writing an email to tell them they had this four blocks off from where it was, on a different cable car line). It continues to be the case that I find moderate-to-serious metadata errors on at least 20% of these University of Washington Libraries photos, and that doesn't even account for the fact that if I'm catching that many, there must be some I'm missing, too. I guess I'm glad you brought these in, because I'm feeding a lot of corrections back to the library that I guess will be of use to anyone who ever actually needs to use this material, but it's getting a little tedious being their unpaid labor. - Jmabel ! talk 00:42, 11 January 2020 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Wow, that's a pretty bad error rate. Do you think it's worth it to us to continue uploading new images of this type? I haven't been running the bot due to a lack of spare time, but I'll probably come back to it at some point, and I'm sure there are more Seattle images I haven't reached yet. – BMacZero (🗩) 19:14, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
At the very least, I think we should add a template that gives a clue about the error rate we've seen on these. I have now certainly spent over 800 hours going through what you have uploaded to date. I haven't been tracking the number of photos I've reviewed in that time (certainly upwards of 2,000, probably twice that), so this is not a small sample. Also, there are (for example) 100+ photos of unknown people walking on downtown Seattle streets in the early 20th Century. Presumably, unless they are interestingly dressed, the only interest in such photos would be the place, and that is typically undocumented in the metadata beyond "Seattle". So far, I've made some effort to place these (and added ImageNotes or further description) but haven't yet added categories.
Besides the outright errors, the omissions boggle the mind. Photo of a building that is probably brand new, and no indication that it was brand new when the photo was taken. Photo of a building identified by the name it had for a couple of years, not the one it subsequently had for 6 decades; etc.
Back on errors, for a moment though: have a look at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Olympic_Mountains_and_Elliott_Bay_from_Seattle,_ca_1900_(SEATTLE_1728).jpg&action=history. Roughly an hour, partly generating ImageNotes but also successively working out that their "ca. 1908" photo had to be (succesively) before 1904, before 1903, and finally before January 2, 1901. - Jmabel ! talk 01:26, 14 January 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I created {{UWash-Check-Needed}} - we can use that going forward and maybe apply it to existing unchecked images with VFC. Feel free to modify it if you can add more helpful information.
Hopefully all this corrected information will be helpful to Wikipedia and anyone else who's browsing the images here or at UWash! – BMacZero (🗩) 04:48, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

Category:Rivers of Mount Rainier National Park[edit]

Maybe we should have something like Category:Cowlitz River in Mount Rainier National Park analogous to Category:Nisqually River in Mount Rainier National Park? - Jmabel ! talk 16:45, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

@Jmabel: I did that based on this map which indicates that no part of the Cowlitz River is actually in Mount Rainier National Park. But let me know if I misread it or it's just wrong. – BMacZero (🗩) 17:22, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
I'm absolutely certain that the Box Canyon of the Cowlitz is in Mount Rainier National Park. It's in the south part of the park, about halfway between the Stevens Canyon entrance and Paradise. See maps at http://npmaps.com/mount-rainier/
I believe that technically it is on the Middle Fork of the Cowlitz River; I don't think we normally break down the Cowlitz by its forks.
https://discoverlewiscounty.com/outdoors/box-canyon-cowlitz certainly agrees that it is considered part of the Cowlitz, but I'd be prepared to see a citation otherwise.
Jmabel ! talk 21:52, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Okay, I think I see. I went with the suggestion in your original post because that does seem to be a pattern for other rivers like this one. – BMacZero (🗩) 03:15, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

File:Construction of Seattle Electric Co.'s steam power plant between Columbia St. and Yesler Way, Post Ave. and Western Ave., Seattle, April 24, 1900 (CURTIS 733).jpg: Not sure I get your recent re-upload here: it looks smaller, doesn't seem to match the source, and if you look at the people it looks stretched vertically. Are you sure this is an improvement? - 16:46, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

@Jmabel: I just used CropTool to remove the vertical white borders. If it's stretching, that sounds like a browser cache problem - try clearing yours? – BMacZero (🗩) 17:24, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
