Help with COI[edit]

Hey! I really don't mean to bother you guys. So here's the thing: I want to edit this article for factual concerns about a newspaper that I happen to be editor for, which would mean that I would have to disclose my COI. So here's where I start to get a little iffy. See, I happen to be a high school junior, and the newspaper happens to be my high school newspaper. So right now I'm in this awkward situation of "should i disclose my COI and basically vet my dumb 17-year-old ass."

Basically: I'm a minor who has a COI and am torn b/w disclosing it and you know, not narrowing my identity to about 15 different teenagers in my area. What should I do?

MadameButterflyKnife talk 01:43, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

With a COI, you shouldn't be editing the article at all. Edits should be requested on the article talk page using the {{request edit}} template, instead. But if you're concerned about revealing your real world identity, however, by doing so (and you should be), it would be best if you did not edit the article at all. While things can seem very important and urgent, Wikipedia is in this for the long haul and there is no hurry. If the needed changes are important enough, someone else will eventually make them. I left the truly-awful article about the business I worked for untouched for years for that very reason (and I had a lot more camouflage for modifying it than you do). Don't take the chance, just let it go. Regards, TransporterMan (TALK) 18:57, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
"With a COI, you shouldn't be editing the article at all. Edits should be requested on the article talk page..." That's not what our CoI policy says. Please read it. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:52, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
I have read it, let me quote the relevant bits for you since you apparently have not read it closely. First sentence, second paragraph: "COI editing is strongly discouraged on Wikipedia." If that's not, "shouldn't be editing the article at all" I'll eat my hat. And then it goes on in the WP:COIEDIT section, fourth bullet point, to say that instead that the {{request edit}} method should instead be used, just as I said above. I'll grant you that "strongly discouraged" is not "prohibited" but a "how to edit with a COI" recommendation or tutorial would certainly fly against the spirit of the policy. The explanatory supplement Plain and simple conflict of interest guide, linked in the policy, puts it far more bluntly in more than one place, the first being "Do not edit articles about yourself, your family or friends, your organization, your clients, or your competitors." (Emphasis added.) — TransporterMan (TALK) 22:36, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
@MadameButterflyKnife: You can legitimately create a second account to make such edits, without linking it to your existing account so long as those accounts never interact. If you do, it would be best to say that you have done so, without revealing your "real" account, on the new account's user page. Superb user name, BTW! Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:52, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice! I probably will do what TransporterMan advised and just let it go for now. MadameButterflyKnife yeah sure.talk 00:08, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

Submission Declined[edit]

Hello, My submission https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Fatima_Bakery_and_Store was Declined on 2 March by Sulfurboy. Details: 'This submission is not adequately supported by reliable sources. Reliable sources are required so that information can be verified.' I'm looking for someone to help me understand why my sources are not reliable since I am new to Wikipedia procedures.

Sayuurii (talk) 06:40, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

Sayuurii, reliability is not the only issue. To establish that the subject is notable, you need several reliable independent published sources with in-depth discussion of the subject. Wikipedia does not count as a reliable source (and anyway, the Wikipedia articles you had cited did not even mention the bakery). News articles based on interviews with the bakery's owner and his family are not independent of the bakery. Maproom (talk) 08:05, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

A potential competence issue[edit]

Hello all. I was originally going to post this at WP:AN, but I think a less formal/official venue might be better off for now. I am questioning the competence level of a fellow user, Tia Canita (talk · contribs), and have for at least two years now. English is not their first language and their persistent use of poor grammar has become quite a burden on other editors having to clean-up. They exclusively edit articles related to The Walking Dead TV series, so the pool of users they interact with is fairly small. Their issues include run-on sentences, incorrect use of gender pronouns, and general poor grammar/odd word choice.

They were first warned in April 2018 about incorrect gender pronoun use and grammar issues; I subsequently warned them again in February and October 2019 about this, but they didn't respond and the same issues still existed. I made another attempt just a few days ago, and they finally responded, stating "I am very sorry I do not know how to speak a lot, English my English is not perfect if it bothers you so much that I edit in my bad grammar correct it or finally check my test area and there you correct it greetings"

I went through their edit history to grab some examples of their various grammar issues. I know it states not to copy large amounts text, so I'll try and be brief, but obviously I want to show my case here.

  • When the user adds something with correct grammar, it's because it's copied from other sources. This edit is copied from here; this from here; and this from here; though he inserts incorrect wording such as "In the episode mid-season premiere" or referring to a season finale episode as a "final season".
  • The biggest issue here is that this user makes edits when they add massive chunks of text, such this, this, and this. All these edits have to be reviewed and basically rewritten from scratch; this generates tons of work for other editors to do which is unfair. An IP commented "Contributors need to know how to write" referring to one of the episode summaries written by them. Here an IP fixes the various gender pronoun mistakes, something Tia Canita is still making despite being warned multiple times; the first which occurred almost two years ago.

Now, I'm looking for opinions from other editors if this indeed is a valid WP:CIR issue that can be raised at WP:AN. Drovethrughosts (talk) 20:02, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

Wordsmith Needed[edit]

The cousin article went through a lot of revisions to consolidate information and reduce the desire to make the article a list of examples. Now its content is OKish but it requires someone of some talent to go through it and wordsmith it a bit. How do I go about finding someone. It seems like most people on wiki just fight perceived vandalism, and not many dedicate there time to make constructive edits.198.151.8.4 (talk) 17:10, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

What article are you talking about? Seraphimblade Talk to me 21:40, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

My article could not get any publishment process since more than 1 month[edit]

Hi Dear Editor,

I think I am sure that my article has no problem and fits the regulations and rules of wikipedia, however it did not get any publication process.

Could you check it for me, I posted the link below

My best regards

User:Intellectualwriter/sandbox — Preceding unsigned comment added by Intellectualwriter (talk • contribs) 21:08, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

I can see no evidence that the page has been submitted for review. By the way, what is the subject's name? Your sandbox variously gives it as "TAS" and "Tas", while some of the sources cited give "Taş". Maproom (talk) 21:36, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Intellectualwriter, you have not submitted the article for review. However, since it is a spamvertisement, it would be declined anyway (and I'm about a hot second away from just hitting the G11 button myself, to be quite honest). You would need to fix that first. Wikipedia does not permit advertising or promotion. Seraphimblade Talk to me 21:38, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
@Intellectualwriter: I just made some improvements to User:Intellectualwriter/sandbox (the link you give above), only to find you have a copy of that page at Draft:Suleyman Tas. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:31, 14 March 2020 (UTC)

Andrew Peach[edit]

Hi all, can I bring your attention to my latest comment on the talk page of Andrew Peach? I have been fobbed off before being told self-promotion isn't a issue with this article, but have since made a discovery. I believe most of the information on the article has been "bigged up" more than it should have been. Possibly not all true? This article seems to be ore of a presenter's CV than anything else. Also, most of the links are dead! Any help would be gratefully received! - Funky Snack (Talk) —Preceding undated comment added 11:52, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

WikiDiff[edit]

there are 2 commas as shown in the below text by WikiDiff:- pecan English (wikipedia pecan) Alternative forms

If this is about [5], I don't see a double comma there. Maproom (talk) 14:08, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

Graphing data pulled from wikidata[edit]

I'm helping an editor set up a graph for coronavirus cases. Is there a way to pull data from Wikidata instead of coding it into the article with {{Graph:Chart}}? ☆ Bri (talk) 19:41, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

Bri, there doesn't seem to be a way. The template {{Graph:Lines}} was written to support using data from Wikidata. However using a wikidata query no longer works and, according to the phab ticket linked to from the template page, doesn't seem to be getting fixed. StarryGrandma (talk) 21:05, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Bri, you might want to look into putting the data on Commons. Graph:Lines can display data that is in a table on Commons. The first example in the template documantation takes its data from Commons at c:Data:Bls.gov/US Women's weekly earnings as a percent of men's by age, annual averages.tab. Need help with Pat Day page[edit]

An editor or series of editors have done a character assassination piece on Pat Day, one of the greatest jockeys who ever lived.

Each time I add important achievements of his and take out mean-spirited, hateful and one-sided attack pieces, all of my edits are removed.

I need help in protecting my edits.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Nathan — Preceding unsigned comment added by NatroneDay (talk • contribs) 23:17, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

@NatroneDay:, before proceeding with any further edits, to the Pat Day page or anywhere else, I highly recommend that you read the following links on the Core Content Policies and the Contributing to Wikipedia pages. The text you are removing looks like an over-reaction to the criticism in the lead paragraph. Any biography of a living person on Wikipedia must have all statements sourced but statements that do have a source are usually retained. The correct thing to do is not to keep making the same edits (that's called edit warring and can lead to blocking your ability to edit the project), but to use the article talk page. Every article has a talk page where you can discuss what you think is problematic about the article and reach an agreement with other editors. This is a normal, even vital, part of editing articles about people. I hope this helps and is not overwhelming. Please feel free to contact me at my talk page if you have any further questions. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 18:10, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
I sympathize with the OP. Language like "Many still grind their teeth" is unencyclopedic, as well as unreferenced. Maproom (talk) 09:11, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Your use of the word "emerging" in the last of those is revealing. It means "not notable yet". I suggest you give up on that one. Maproom (talk) 09:45, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Request for Editor Review of Credit Union National Association Page[edit]

Hi,

On January 27, we offered suggested edits to the Credit Union National Association page through the talk feature to avoid any appearance of tampering with our own entry, but it does not appear that these edits have been reviewed or incorporated to date.

Would an editor mind reviewing the recommended edits and either accepting them or providing feedback in the immediate future?

Thanks, --CUNA News (talk) 14:29, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
