The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic has shut down or delayed production of television programs in several countries.

Production[edit]

Australia[edit]

On Network 10, The Project, Dancing with the Stars Australia, and Studio 10, suspended their in-studio audiences.[1] The Australian Survivor: All Stars reunion episode is set to film without an audience and will be hosted by Osher Günsberg, rather than the series's regular host Jonathan LaPaglia, due to travel restrictions.[2] Network 10 also changed the racecourse for their second season of The Amazing Race Australia so that it would film only in Australia as opposed to around the world.[3]

On the ABC, Q&A and Shaun Micallef's Mad as Hell suspended their studio audiences.[4] Australian Ninja Warrior excluded audiences from attending tapings aside from the contestants' family members.[5] The Voice Australia and Australia's Got Talent postponed production due to international talent facing a fourteen-day quarantine after arriving in Australia.[2]

Canada[edit]

On March 11, the eighth season of Big Brother Canada suspended audiences from attending its eviction episodes.[6] The Marilyn Denis Show and The Social soon followed by suspending studio audiences.[7] Warner Bros. Television suspended its Vancouver-based productions of Riverdale, The Flash, Batwoman, and Supernatural.[8][9][10] Additional Vancouver-based television productions that have been suspended include Snowpiercer and See.[10]

With National Hockey League play suspended, CBC Television replaced its weekly Hockey Night in Canada broadcast with Movie Night in Canada, a double bill of Canadian films.[11]

Philippines[edit]

Television talk, reality, variety and game shows in the Philippines temporarily filmed without a live audience. TAPE Inc. announced on March 9 that it would stop admitting live audiences for their variety show Eat Bulaga!, which airs on GMA Network; ABS-CBN followed suit, announcing on March 10 that they would do the same for their television shows including It's Showtime, Banana Sundae, Magandang Buhay, the second season of the Philippine version of I Can See Your Voice and ASAP. GMA Network then followed suit again with Wowowin (including its Saturday primetime edition), All-Out Sundays, Centerstage, The Boobay and Tekla Show, Mars Pa More and GMA News TV's Idol sa Kusina and Tonight with Arnold Clavio.[12][13]

On March 14, 2020, ABS-CBN and GMA Network both announced that they will suspend production on its drama shows and live entertainment shows effective March 15 (the same day an quarantine declared by President Rodrigo Duterte enacted in Metro Manila and Cainta, Rizal). Hence, ABS-CBN would air its previously aired shows temporarily in place for primetime viewing: 100 Days to Heaven, May Bukas Pa and On the Wings of Love. Additionally, the network gave its iWant TV series I Am U on its television debut.[14][15][16][17]

United Kingdom[edit]

BBC One postponed filming for a celebrity version of Race Across the World that was set to start filming in April.[18] The following week, the channel suspended production of Peaky Blinders and Line of Duty.[19] Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway canceled a finale taping set at Walt Disney World following the park's closure.[20] On March 15, filming for the second season of the Netflix series The Witcher in the United Kingdom was suspended for two weeks.[21] Starting on the week of March 16, Jeremy Vine, Loose Women, and QI filmed without studio audiences.[22] On March 18, the BBC suspended production of its medical dramas and soap operas including EastEnders, Casualty, Doctors, and Holby City.[23]

United States[edit]

Talk shows and game shows[edit]

Most American television shows are filmed in either New York City or the Los Angeles metropolitan area. On March 12, 2020, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a statewide emergency declaration which disallows crowds of 500 or more people until April 12.[24] Cuomo lowered the number to 50 people on March 16 per a recommendation from the CDC which suggests an eight week minimum.[25] Also on March 12, California Governor Gavin Newsom banned gatherings of more than 250 people, effective until March 31.[26] Starting on March 12, a number of game and talk shows produced in the United States announced they would begin filming without a studio audience.[27][28] The shows include late night talk shows shows The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Late Late Show with James Corden, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,[29] Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, and The Greg Gutfeld Show;[30] the game shows Jeopardy! (host Alex Trebek has a weakened immune system due to his pancreatic cancer),[31] and Wheel of Fortune; and the daytime talk shows Live with Kelly and Ryan, The View, Dr. Phil, The Wendy Williams Show, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.[31] Game shows America's Got Talent and Family Feud also announced they would film without an audience.[32]

On March 12, a number of shows — including multiple late-night shows which had before planned to tape without an audience — announced they would suspend production. Affected shows include The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and The Wendy Williams Show.[33] Other productions such as American Ninja Warrior, Card Sharks, and The Price Is Right announced that they would be postponed.[32] Starting the week of March 10, CBS began posting disclaimers in the end credits for The Price Is Right for a number of episodes which recorded in late 2019 into early 2020, which reads "This episode was recorded prior to the outbreak of COVID-19. Travel prizes in regions affected by COVID-19 may be fulfilled with alternative arrangements. For more information on COVID-19, please visit the Centers for Disease Control's website."[34]

Scripted series and reality shows[edit]

Disney shut down filming of their streaming television show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, due to release later in the year, in Prague.[35] CBS veteran reality TV series The Amazing Race stopped production on its thirty-third season in late February,[36] and Survivor, which is due to film in Fiji for the forty-first and forty-second seasons, postponed production for two months.[37][38] Universal Television delayed shooting for the shows Russian Doll, Rutherford Falls, and Little America.[39] Apple Inc. suspended production for the The Morning Show first and all other Apple TV+ series suspended production a day later.[40] ABC also delayed shooting for The Bachelorette on its sixteenth season with Clare Crawley as the lead, which was due to film shortly after the completion of The Bachelor, where it has changed to travel only in the United States rather than international travel.[41] The sitcom One Day at a Time also filmed without an audience.[42]

Politics[edit]

On March 15, the first one-on-one debate of the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries took place between former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Bernie Sanders in CNN's Washington, D.C. studios and without an audience, as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The debate was moved from Arizona, which is under a state of emergency and had 12 confirmed cases of COVID-19 on that date.[43][44]

Sports[edit]

Numerous sports leagues postponed or cancelled their seasons on March 12. The NCAA cancelled all winter and spring tournaments, most notably the three-week long Division I men's and women's basketball tournaments, with ESPN, CBS Sports, and Turner Sports losing potentially large television audiences.[45] The remainder of the 2020 Major League Baseball season's spring training was cancelled on March 12.[46][47] On March 16, MLB announced that the season will be postponed indefinitely, after the recommendations from the CDC to restrict events of more than 50 people for the next eight weeks.[48] The 2019–20 NBA season was suspended for 30 days after several players were infected with COVID-19, most of them on the Utah Jazz.[49] The 2019–20 NHL season was suspended for an indefinite amount of time.[50] The 2020 Major League Soccer season was also suspended for 30 days.[51] The 2020 National Lacrosse League season was postponed until further notice.[52] The suspensions affect all national and regional sports networks in the country, along with single-sport networks for those aforementioned, as well as ones for other sports, such as Golf Channel and Tennis Channel.

Affected productions[edit]

As of March 18, 2020, a number of television shows announced that production was either delayed or stopped completely.[53] Some shows continue with production but without a studio audience.
