SVG Chart[edit]

Hi, it seems that the template SVG Chart is not being maintained anymore. I found the instructions a bit cryptic and I note that in the last few years, there are only a few posts on the talk page, most of which have gone unanswered. Should that page perhaps be marked historical or deprecated or something? I also see a reference to "another SVG generator that is under development" from 2015, does anyone know what/where that is?

Alternatively, does anyone know of a better way to create SVG charts that can easily be updated by laypeople? I have tried various pieces of software, but they all produce SVG files that have completely unreadable source code (for humans). I really like the idea of this SVG Chart template... Is it true that the Graph extension (see also here) needs to be applied to every language wiki separately as claimed on the same talk page?

(I transferred this text from the Graphics Lab for Illustration Workshop] as I thought this might be a more suitable venue for this discussion.) KarlFrei (talk) 13:22, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

Advice on quality of two versions of same image[edit]

Hi. I've been working on some maintenance tasks and come across File:Force H off Gibraltar Rowland Lang hc1582 large.jpg. It has two versions, the first version, uploaded in 2013, has a slightly blurry quality, due to it being a painting. The second version looks like it has had some sort of sharpness filter applied but on my screen there are a lot of residual artifacts in the image. Is anyone else getting that or is it just my screen?
I'm tempted to revert to the original but the file is used on 5 different projects. Is there a way to split the upload history and move one of the versions to a separate file? That way projects can decide which version they prefer. From Hill To Shore (talk) 01:53, 8 February 2020 (UTC)

  • Upload history really doesn't matter because no copyrights are involved. You can just download & upload one of the versions under a different name, and cross-link them with {{Other}}. - Jmabel ! talk 00:40, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
If you insist on splitting go to COM:HMS, current requests (note, that this is actually an own subpage). This said, also the first version has compression artifacts, but these are not that obvious. BTW in the source the image has (for me) a resolution of 1200x586 pixels, so it is even larger than the first uploaded version – it also has these artifacts, though. You should wait with uploading this for a split. — Speravir – 01:14, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
One important thing: I am not sure that the given license is correct. On the sourse I read “© the copyright holder. Photo credit: National Maritime Museum”. I do not see that the painting is a work of the UK government. The painter died in 1956, hence this had to be deleted now (perhaps after splitting) and undeleted in 2027. — Speravir – 01:21, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice but it is Crown Copyright as it was created by an official UK government (Royal Navy) artist during World War II. Crown Copyright in the UK expires 50 years after creation/publication, so this file became PD by 1993. Work by the same artist before or after WW II won't become PD until 2027. The explanation and date of creation can be made clearer on the file page.
How do I handle the compression issues without damaging the image quality? From Hill To Shore (talk) 06:01, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for clarification. The artifacts are already present on source, so you cannot do anything. It would need a new photograph, or if there is an original raw file (or TIFF or PNG), a less compressed JPEG created from this. — Speravir – 17:50, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
