Notes
  1. ^ Countries and territories where cases were diagnosed. Nationality and location of original infection may vary. In some countries, the cases cover several territories and dependencies, as noted accordingly.
  2. ^ Reported confirmed cases. Actual case numbers are probably higher, but impossible to ascertain.
  3. ^ "–" denotes that no data is currently available for that territory, not that the value is zero.
  4. ^ Includes clinically diagnosed cases and deaths from 12 February 2020 and onwards in the province of Hubei.
  5. ^ Starting 27 Feb, only at-risk people showing symptoms have been tested.[2][3]
  6. ^ Includes all cases overseas in regions of French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte and Réunion, and in collectivities of French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Saint Barthélemy and Saint Martin.
  7. ^ Includes all dependencies cases in Guam, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands, in addition to cases identified on the Grand Princess.
  8. ^ While there are more positive cases in Switzerland, the figure reported here is only the number of confirmed cases.
  9. ^ Includes all constituent countries cases in Aruba and Curaçao.
  10. ^ The Dutch Government (responsible agency RIVM) does not count its number of recoveries.[11]
  11. ^ Includes all cases in the British Overseas Territories of the Cayman Islands, Gibraltar and Montserrat and the Crown dependencies of Guernsey and Jersey.
  12. ^ From 13 March, testing of the normal population was discontinued, and is now only reserved for health professionals and acute ill people in vulnerable groups. The Norwegian Institute of Public Health states there are more infected people in Norway than the figures show. The dark numbers are presumed to be higher because of limited testing.[14]
  13. ^ Testing of suspected infections has been semi-suspended in certain regions as of 12 March 2020, in order to focus efforts on people with increased risk of serious illness and complications.
  14. ^ Includes all cases in constituent countries of the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
  15. ^ The British cruise ship Diamond Princess was in Japanese waters, and Japanese administration was asked to manage its quarantine, with the passengers having not entered Japan. Therefore, this case is neither included in the Japanese government's official count nor in United Kingdom's one. The World Health Organization classifies the cases as being located "on an international conveyance".
  16. ^ Includes cases identified on the MS River Anuket.
  17. ^ Excluding the cases from Diamond Princess cruise ship which are classified as "on an international conveyance".
  18. ^ Excluding Northern Cyprus.

Confirmed cases

As of March 18, 2020, a total of 198,742 cases were confirmed with 107,974 active cases in 150 countries and territories, including five cruise ships.

Statistics

Africa

Cases have been confirmed in Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, eSwatini, Ethiopia,[114] Gabon,[115] Gambia[116], Ghana, Guinea,[117] Ivory Coast,[118] Kenya,[119] Liberia,[120] Mauritania, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Somalia,[120] South Africa, Sudan,[121] Tanzania,[122] Togo, Tunisia, and Zambia. According to Michael Yao, WHO's head of emergency operations in Africa, early detection is vital because the continent's health systems "are already overwhelmed by many ongoing disease outbreaks".[123] As of 17 March, cases had been confirmed in all countries in Africa except Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Cape Verde, Chad, Comoros, Eritrea, Guinea-Bissau, Lesotho, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, Mozambique, Niger, São Tomé and Príncipe, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.

Asia

A cluster of mysterious pneumonia cases was detected in December 2019 in Wuhan and eventually spread to the rest of China.[124] Afterwards, many other Asian countries started to confirm cases, with some of the most affected countries being South Korea, Japan and Iran. Sophisticated modelling of the outbreak suggests that while the number of cases in China would have been many times higher without interventions such as early detection and isolation of the infected, 66% fewer people would have been infected if China had implemented measures as little as a week earlier. [125] As of March 18, cases were recorded in all Asian countries except East Timor, Syria, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan (while Laos, Myanmar, North Korea and Yemen have suspected cases).

Europe

Initial cases in Europe were reported in France, in Germany and other countries with a relatively low number of cases. On 21 February, a large outbreak was reported in Italy, mostly in the north, near Milan. Cases grew rapidly as the outbreak spread across Europe. As of 15 March, there have been 55,000 confirmed cases and 2300 deaths in Europe; out of these, 25,000 cases and 1,800 deaths were in Italy. Cases were recorded in all European countries (some of them exclusively linked to the outbreak in Italy). The WHO has declared Europe as the new epicentre of the virus after the situation improved in China.[126]

North America

Cases have been confirmed in Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Greenland, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States, Aruba, the Cayman Islands, Curaçao, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Barthélemy and Saint Martin. As of 17 March, cases had been recorded in all countries in North America except Dominica, El Salvador, Grenada, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Oceania

Cases have been confirmed in Australia, French Polynesia, Guam and New Zealand. Many small Pacific island nations have thus far avoided the outbreak by closing their borders.

South America

As of March 18, cases were recorded in all South American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela and the French overseas department of French Guiana.

International conveyance

The outbreak spread to several cruise ships including the Diamond Princess, the Grand Princess, the World Dream, the MS Westerdam and the MS Braemar.[127][128][129][130]

Cruise operators have started to either cancel or change their itineraries as countries across the world implement travel restrictions to curb the disease spread. Ports are refusing to accept cruise ships that have been either to Chinese ports or carrying Chinese passengers during the outbreak.

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which represents 90% of cruise operators, announced the various precautionary measures being implemented by its members. All passengers who have travelled to or visited/transited through China, Hong Kong and Macau within 14 days before embarkation will be denied entry into cruise ships. Any persons in close contact with either suspected or diagnosed cases of coronavirus infection will also be denied entry. [131]
